In an attempt to define or clarify certain rules or situations.

Society (Western, and probably some not so Western) requires that we marry. In less "civilised" societies there are alternatives.

Its difficult to live for 60+ years, obeying all the rules of marriage, just as it is difficult to live obeying all society's rules (e.g. keeping to speed limits, not lying, not littering etc..) - so why bother?? why restrict yourself to such rules?

Don't get married - draw up a contract (which defines financials) and live to that.
