Don't have expectations

Dont Plan | committing suicide

Back to Rules to live by

This is related to the Dont Plan Rule, and applies positively and negatively.

Positively: A lot of the time we "put up with life", because we think that "when so-and-so happens, things will be better".

For example "when he/she gets that new job - (s)he'll be home more - and things will be better", or, "when I'm settled in the new apartment, I'll go out more - and things will get better".......

Sometimes, things DO pan out - the way you expect.....often they don't......and what happens then?

You get more depressed/dissatisfied.

So - you should never be depressed/dissatisfied........ and one way of achieving this - is to not look forward......  don't have expectations. If you expect nothing, you'll probably get it....and can feel happy. Or, you expect  nothing and get - something.... what a bonus!! Happy!!

You'll probably say "but what a way to live - never looking forward, never expecting anything".

But I'd reply - if you live like that - at least your life should be "flat, maybe boring, un-exciting", but your alternative is to have "highs" of expectation, followed by "lows" of dissatisfaction - not good!

Negatively: A super additional benefit of applying this rule is, ............when you think/expect life to get worse - "I'm going to get laid-off, and the future looks bleak". Look forward to too many "negatives" - and you'll end up committing suicide.

So, this rule makes avoiding suicide easier, and allows you to view a somewhat negative future - with disdain and disinterest - Brilliant!!
